The Challenge
Today we will be exploring grit and integrity through an interactive design challenge centered around the concept of STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, arts & math).
GoalWhat is your overall goal?
Your goal is to engineer a quarantine box that allows the CDC to continue working with a highly contagious virus while still protecting their staff. What does it mean to quarantine something or someone? What problem are you trying to solve? What questions do you have about this challenge? |
Design Challenge
What do you need to accomplish?
Your box needs to serve as a working mobile laboratory that enables you to safe transfer a disease (in the form of a powder) from a vial to a secure container -- in this case from one film canister to another canister. The entire procedure must be conducted within the safety of the quarantine box. You can not spill any powder or get it on your hands. |
ConstraintsWhat are the limitations of this work?
You must create your mobile laboratory in teams and use one of the provided cardboard boxes. You have 35 minutes to engineering a working box. You have the following materials at your disposal: 1 sheet protector, 1 foot of foil, 4 index cards, 6 pipe cleaners, 2 craft sticks, 2 feet of packing tape, 2 spoons, 2 gloves and scissors. |
Testing & Reflecting
What are the features of your design? How did you come up with this idea? How did your design change along the way? If you had more time to improve, what would you change?
|
Come up with a list of action
words that describe the process your team went through as you engineered your
quarantine box. Identify three words to share with the larger community.
